Darwin’s Dream III

DarwinDreamCDcover

Saturday and Sunday May 4th and 5th at 3:00 PM
Bowdoin College Chapel

The Bowdoin College Chamber Choir, directed by Robert K. Greenlee, will feature the premiere of a work entitled DARWIN’S DREAM III, created jointly by composer Elliott Schwartz and Peregrine Press member Dorothy Schwartz. The visual images are drawn from Dorothy Schwartz’s 2009 exhibition at the June Fitzpatrick Gallery in Portland (in celebration of Darwin’s bicentennial year). An electronic collage by Elliott Schwartz, designed originally to be played at the gallery showing, has become the underpinning of a work for choir, piano, vocal soloists and narrator. The texts are taken from Darwin’s own writings. Versions of this multi-media piece have been performed at Cambridge University in the UK, and at Symphony Space in New York.

The Chamber Choir concert will take place in the Bowdoin Chapel on campus, Saturday and Sunday May 4th and 5th, 3:00 pm on both dates. The entire program is devoted to American music, and will also include works by Eric Whitacre, Alicia Keys and folksong transcriptions.

Print Artists Make

mke

The Peregrine Press portfolio: Local Conditions is at the SGC International Printmaking Conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from March 20-23, 2013

We get ink on our hands and under our nails. We draw, scratch and etch. We work our images over time, opening ourselves to how making informs our thinking and how thinking informs our making. Our work inspires us, speaks to us and transforms us as we inspire, speak to and transform our work. Working with materials, tools, machines and emerging technologies, we forge and reinvent the visual language of printmaking. Join us in Milwaukee, a city long known for its makers and its making, where we will celebrate making in print.

Hosted by: Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) and Peck School of the Arts (PSOA)

Peregrine Press presents the portfolio, “Local Conditions,” a suite of 28 prints reflecting on our lives in Maine and how we intertwine and interact with our surroundings, our communities, our situations, and each other.

Substratum.org

substratum
Zea Mays Printmaking has recently launched a new website:
Substratum: an artistic inquiry into printmaking substrates + health impacts

“With the support of Artists In Context and help from scientists, environmental engineers and health practitioners, a group of seven artist members from Zea Mays Printmaking began an investigation into the health impacts of the printing plates we use. Substratum is a documentation of our investigation and hopefully a useful resource for other artist/printmakers and DIY practitioners.

Substratum includes health and safety information about wood, linoleum, plastic, metal and photopolymer printing plates, and links to valuable resources for understanding and further investigation.”

Zea Mays Printmaking has long been a pioneer in the quest to create a non-toxic printmaking studio. To that end, a group of their artists embarked on

“… an investigation into the health impacts of the printing plates we use. Substratum is a documentation of our investigation and hopefully a useful resource for other artist/printmakers and DIY practitioners.”

Check it out – it’s a beautiful site!
