reThink INK: 25 Years at Mixit Print Studio

April 12th–July 31st, 2012

Boston Public Library
Copley Square
700 Boylston Street

From the BPL:

The Boston Public Library, long a collector of the finest examples of Boston printmaking, continues to support and promote local artists as it showcases some of the area’s newest and most intriguing pieces in a substantial new exhibition, reThink INK: 25 Years at Mixit Print Studio. This exhibition was created in partnership with Mixit Print Studio, established in 1987 on the ground floor of the former Mixit soap factory in Somerville. Thousands of prints by talented area printmakers have rolled through the presses of Mixit Print Studio in the last quarter century.

The more than 150 pieces in the exhibition by Mixit artists are divided into four components: the Portfolio, a collaborative project of 66 prints created specifically for this exhibition; a juried exhibition of 44 works; thirteen multi-dimensional installations; and selections from the Boston Public Library’s exceptional permanent collection of works by Boston artists. Several of the artists were inspired by the Boston Public Library’s support of their work and have submitted pieces that draw from elements of the library and its collections.

First Class: A Mail Art Project

Original Artist's Book by Sissy Buck
(more detail photos below)

Peregrine Press members Sissy Buck and Robin McCarthy have work included in the exhibition “First Class: A Mail Art Project” at the the Wishcamper Center, Pope/Cheney Room, USM, Portland Campus through May 31, 2012. This is a collaborative exhibit of artists’ books from the Kate Cheney Chappell ‘83 Center Book Arts critique group, and according to their statement:

… the term Mail Art was loosely interpreted for subject matter, but the ground rule was that each project had to go through the United States Postal Service…each needed a stamp with the cancellation mark. Each member chose a theme for her book, invited everyone in the group (and other artists) to create a page for her book and mail it back to her. Once each member received all of the pages for her book, she then assembled it into her own book structure. Some members incorporated an aspect of the mail system such as stamps, post boxes, envelopes, etc, while others chose themes as diverse as Victorian paper dolls, crows, paint chips, houses, maps, and even the Gilded Age. In this age of computers and emails, it was wonderful to receive letters in the traditional post box again. The result is a diverse and interesting range of Mail Art compiled into Artists’ Books.

Three handmade artist’s books by Peregrine Press member Mary Brennan have just been acquired for Bowdoin College by Richard Lindemann, director of the college’s George J. Mitchell Special Collections & Archives. These acquistions were in part a result of a public lecture given earlier in March by noted freelance curator Britta Konau in “The Art of the Book,” a lecture series sponsored by the Farnsworth Museum of Rockland, Maine, at which Mary was one of approximately 12 artists whose works were shown and discussed.

One and Two – Artist's sketchbooks in two volumes. Abstract watercolors on Magnani Pescia paper. Handsewn and bound with a Hedi Kyle woven binding stitch. Covers are transparent polyester. Size: 4 x 7.5 inches. Unique.

PrintHouston: NEXT

Next
Call for entries for PrintHouston: NEXT.
Entry submission deadline: April 2, 2012

PrintMatters has announced PrintHouston: NEXT, a contemporary print biennial to be held in conjunction with PRINTHOUSTON 2012. Dr. Dena Woodall, Assistant Curator of Prints and Drawings at Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, will be the juror this year.

Per the PrintMatters website:

PRINTHOUSTON is a month-long celebration of original prints, the artists who create them, and the people who collect them. Exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and special events at art galleries, non-profit organizations, print shops, and museums will happen throughout the city during June 2012.

We are interested in artwork that presents printmaking as a viable and adaptable medium. In addition to lithography, relief, intaglio, monoprint, monotype, or serigraphy, we are open to video, animation, installations, ceramics, sculptures, and artists’ books. We only ask that the primary technique(s) used in the creation of the work be those listed above.

4411 Montrose is located in Houston’s beautiful Museum District and is home to four blue-chip galleries (www.4411montrose.com). Anya Tish Gallery and Wade Wilson Gallery are also participating in PRINTHOUSTON 2012. In addition to the opening reception, PrintMatters will host special events and artists’ talks for local arts organizations and collectors in our month-long stay in the downstairs gallery.
