Prints by German expressionist, Max Beckmann, will be on view at the Portland Museum of Art: March 13 through May 23, 2010. From the Museum press release:

(Portland, Maine) This spring, the Portland Museum of Art will feature an exhibition of the graphic work of Max Beckmann, one of the most significant German artists of the modern era. Modernism and Masquerade: Max Beckmann (1884–1950), on view March 13 through May 23, 2010, will present approximately 40 prints from the Museum’s permanent collection and private collections. Focusing predominantly on Beckmann’s portraits, this exhibition will provide important insights into the artist whose powerful approach to the human condition continues to move and inspire viewers. The exhibition also highlights Beckmann’s treatment of scenes of both gaiety—the circus and theatre—and alienation.

Here and There

jallen72
Whitney Art Works is pleased to announce Here and There,
an exhibit of new drawings and paintings by Peregrine Press member Judith Allen-Efstathiou

Allen-Efstathiou deals with juxtaposition in her personal life (splitting her time between Athens and Maine winters) and in her creative life. Her work relies on an interlocking and exchange of “here” with “there” that is visually rewarding and stimulating. “Here and There” is about duality; a show that is bi-national, bilingual, binary, and bilateral.

February 5 – March 27, 2010
Whitney Art Works
492 Congress Street
Portland, Maine

Hours: Wednesday – Saturday 12:00 PM – 6:00 PM or by appointment
Opening Reception: First Friday, February 5th, from 5:00 – 8:00 PM

Artist Talk: February 11th at 12:30 PM

Mark/Remarque

Mark/Remarque SGC Logo

Southern Graphics Council Conference “Mark/Remarque”
March 24th – 27th 2010
Philadelphia, PA

From the SCG Mark/Remarque website:

Printmaking is a paradigmatic artmaking process with the potential of recording all stages of the creative process. For artists, it exists as a living media not as an obsolete manufacturing process. Mark/Remarque will examine traditional and digital print processes (marks), critical discourse important to the field (remarks), and consider the concepts associated with the historical print term remarque: rarity, testing, concept amplification, and boundary extension.

The conference is timed to coincide with Philagrafika 2010, an international festival of contemporary art focusing on artistic practices that engage the visual, intellectual, and creative frontiers in printmaking. Galleries and museums throughout Philadelphia will host print exhibitions. Of interest to all conference participants with be Philagraphika’s centerpiece exhibition: The Graphic Unconscious, which will present the pervasive role of the print in contemporary artistic production.
